Forget about ISO3200 and try not to use ISO1600 if possible. Those setting in Mid or Entry level SLR are not meant for Actual Shooting, but yes for Emergency.

D300 ISO1600 better than ISO640 in my old D70s ... And according to some review, D90 have better ISO performance than D300. Just try not to underexpose and don't include too many black in the frame will be alot better.

I usually shoot with slightly underexposed setting for digital because I concern about details in brighter part of the picture.

To me, a little noise is acceptable, but losing detail is what I cannot accept.

hhhmm .... Let's try this ...

Try taking a few pictures of a black object, maybe any lens you have. Set the Image Quality to RAW, White Balance Preset and try maintain Shutter more than 1/125, else you' handshake ... hehehe

1. at ISO200 , underexposed it by 1 stop.
2. at ISO640 , underexposed it by 1 stop.
3. at ISO1600, underexposed it by 1 stop.

Load all the images to Photoshop or Lightroom or Capture NX or any RAW conversion software you have.

1. Adjust the exposure until it looks ok to your eyes.
2. Zoom in 100% on each image and compare the Noise Level.
3. Apply NR on each image until the image looks to you.

You should be able to see the difference between Underexposing at Low ISO and High ISO .

For me, if the picture is Under by 1/2 stop at ISO800 or above, and with BLACK inside the picture.... DELETE.

Usually I shoot at no more than 1/2 stop underexposed.

Of course, in the dark, I normally don't underexpose the pics.

I will try what you suggested.
